For Hydir Idris, singing has always been more than just a pursuit. It’s been his way of rising above challenges and connecting deeply with his audience. While his soulful voice could have taken a simpler path, Hydir’s journey has been one of perseverance and relentless determination, built on years of competitions, self-discovery, artistic evolution and collaboration.

His story began in 2005, at just 13 years old, when Hydir was chosen as the lead singer for his school’s Dikir Barat team during an inter school competition. That early recognition fueled his passion, and he soon ventured into solo performances, competing in Star 2007, Gold Voice Teenage 2008 and TKC Idol 2008, among others. Consistently placing in the top three, Hydir quickly became a crowd favorite, his performances characterized by a blend of vocal strength and emotional depth.

The pivotal moment came in 2009 with Anugerah, Mediacorp Suria’s prestigious televised singing competition. Hydir won over audiences with his soulful delivery. He was labelled as, “The boy with the big voice” and was juxtapose with Dato’ Jamal Abdillah. Though eliminated in the semifinals, he was granted a second chance through the wildcard round by judge Ann Hussein, securing his place as a Top 5 semi finalist. This marked the beginning of his ascent in the Singapore-Malay-Commercial-Music scene.

Recognizing his immense potential, singer-songwriter Imran Ajmain’s Gumbira production house introduced Hydir to Malaysian composer Hafiz Hamidun. In 2010, Hydir recorded and released his debut single, ‘Kasih Belum Termiliki’, penned by Ad Samad and Hafiz Hamidun. The heartfelt ballad, recorded at Chapter 6 Studios in Singapore, received widespread praise online, with its one-minute preview garnering close to 30,000 views. This milestone cemented Hydir’s presence as an emerging artist to watch. Hydir also took part in The Final 1 Singapore in 2013, with Kit Chan, Ken Lim and Taufik Batisah as the judges.

Hydir’s second single, ‘Marah Aku’ (2014), produced by Sallys Music Productions, became a breakthrough hit. Its official music video amassed over 100,000 views on his YouTube channel and aired widely on RIA89.7FM, WARNA 94.2FM, Mediacorp Suria, Sensasi StarHub Cable TV. The song was also nominated for Most Popular Song (SG) at Anugerah Planet Muzik 2015. Over the years, he released a series of memorable singles, including ‘Syarina’ (2015), ‘Kau Terindah’ (2016), ‘Janji Padaku’ (2017), and ‘Siapa Aku Tanpa Kamu’ (2018), showcasing his versatility and growth as an artist.

In pursuit of deeper artistic knowledge, Hydir enrolled at LASALLE College of the Arts in 2010 to 2016, where he honed his craft under the guidance of industry veterans. He was coached by renowned Singapore Idol vocal coach Babes Conde and mentored in music production and music business by music composer-producer-educator, Emmy Award and Three-time CNN Hero nominee, Dr. Joseph Curiale, who had worked with stars like Kit Chan, Michael Jackson, Ray Charles and more. Hydir’s dedication paid off when his unreleased song ‘Keliru’ was rewarded by Dr. Curiale to be the number one for LASALLE’s official CD project 2016. The track was self-mixed by Hydir and mastered by Ocean Butterflies, marking a proud milestone in his educational and artistic growth.

Hydir also broadened his media experience, participating in Mediacorp’s Malay Radio Academy in 2009, a program that deepened his understanding of the broadcasting landscape. These experiences equipped him with the skills to navigate the music and media industries with confidence and professionalism.

After independently releasing music between 2009 and 2019, Hydir signed with Hikayat Records in 2020, releasing ‘Cinta Dalam Diam’. When his contract ended, Hydir returned to his roots as an independent artist, embracing the challenges of self-funded projects. His latest releases, ‘Masih’ and ‘Jelas’ (2024), highlight his resilience and artistic development. Collaborating with celebrated Southeast Asian composers and producers like Ilham Baso and Reyza Hamizan, these tracks have received significant media attention and support on platforms such as RIA 89.7FM, WARNA 94.2FM, and Mediacorp Suria.

Hydir’s music reflects his journey, one of passion, struggle, and triumph. “Every song I release is a piece of my story,” he shares. “Singing has been my constant companion, and I hope my journey inspires others to keep believing in their dreams.”

Looking ahead, Hydir is determined to expand his career through regional collaborations with composers and producers, aiming to leave a lasting impact on the Southeast Asian music scene. With his unwavering dedication and undeniable talent, Hydir Idris continues to carve his place as a celebrated voice in Southeast Asia’s contemporary pop culture.
